CONGRATS TOBIAS!
Tobias Tello first started coming to our weekly fun runs when he was just 11 years old. Our policy is that children need to run with a parent or guardian so Tobias’ dad would try to keep up with him, but Tobias liked to run… fast.
I was hesitant to let him run without his dad until some of the faster runners of the group told me that they would be his guardians. They could see the fire in Tobias’ eyes and wanted to help cultivate his love of running. They could also see potential.
Early on, those 3-5 mile fun runs challenged Tobias to run further than he had ever before. But with each mile, he grew stronger and more confident. Soon, 3-5 miles was just a warm-up for him.
In 2016, he and his dad ran the Eversource Hartford Half Marathon together and finished in a very respectable 2:11. I remember seeing him at the halfway point. He just floated by with a smile as wide as the Mississippi. He made running look so natural and effortless. I knew then that this kid was born to run. And run he did.
Fast forward to last weekend when Tobias set out to run the fastest known time (FKT) for an unsupported run of the Quinnipiac Trail from beginning to end, back to the beginning. A total of 36 miles that includes lots of elevation and two summits of Sleeping Bear Mountain – all unsupported. He would even have to refill his water supply from natural sources and carry his own food.
I eagerly tracked his run via his dad’s posts and joined a host of others who were super excited when he posted his finishing photo along with his time: 8:57:25. A new FKT by 20 minutes. Not bad for a 15-year-old!
