THIS WEEK'S WEDNESDAY WORKOUT IS AT MCCORD MIDDLE SCHOOL!

Use Duct Tape If You Have To
At the insistence of Mr. Calvert I have been asked to advise you NOT to do that. I of course wanted to ignore him. Do not use duct tape. Unless of course your attempting to navigate any one of these "fixes."
Why are we talking about duct tape??? Like most of you I am nearing the end of a training cycle. I can feel it. Everywhere.
My plantar is flaring up on my right foot. My right hamstring is tighter than a banjo. My left achilles has phantom pains out of no where. Three weeks. That's all I need to make it through. Three more blissfully excruciating weeks. Where's the duct tape?!
Sadly, as you have probably figured out by now it's not quite that simple. Or is it? You have at your disposal the greatest form of duct tape. REST first, then PT!
Most of you have three or four weeks remaining until your goal race. You very likely have some of the aches and pains I mentioned above. You've put in mile after mile, day after day to get to this point. Don't screw it up.
Sean and his crew with Fit for Life PT are amazing at what they do. Sean, Laura, and Joe have each been instrumental in keeping me healthyish so that I can get through the first phase of my goals for the year. The stretches and the exercises they've given me have been game changers. But, as my stubborn self is realizing, none of it will matter if I don't listen to my body and REST!
For me, that means shifting a long run day to get in an extra day off to allow my body to heal up a bit. In the interim I'll likely have Joe or Laura do an ultrasound treatment or two. Then I'll get in the miles I need to and repeat as necessary.
You've given up a lot to go on this journey. You have a bit more to give up. Don't lose sight of the goal. Make a few sacrifices if you need to. Keep moving forward and let a little extra rest be your duct tape to get you through your goal race.
See you at the next workout!
Jeff

This week and next week, MIT will continue our focus on the core of your body. Our previous newsletter included Dr Bright’s entry about the piriformis, the plan for this week is the low back and abdomen, and we’ll close out this section with a hamstring update for the next newsletter. This is no April Fool’s joke: if we’re dedicating three weeks of the MIT season to this one area of the body, it must be important. The core of your body is, indeed, that important: When it comes to strengthening, many runners think the way to become a stronger runner is to run more. Yes, it is important to strengthen your heart, lungs, and legs by running more. However, to become a stronger runner it is important to strengthen the foundation of the body, which is your core. As our Fit For Life Physical Therapy’s Dana Brown points out in her article, the stronger your core is, the more stable your hips, knees, ankles, and feet will become. Dana Brown is a physical therapist assistant who treats patients primarily with the Fit For Life Physical Therapy team at our Lane Avenue location. She graduated from Bradford School - Columbus in 2018 with her Associate Degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant. Prior to PTA school, she graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2015 with a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology. Dana grew up in the Chicago suburbs and spent all her life in Illinois until moving to Columbus in 2016. Dana loves the outdoors, being active, exploring coffee shops, and spending time with friends. She also enjoys running leisurely and occasionally participates in local races. She lives in Grandview Heights with her husband, Calvin. Fit For Life Physical Therapy is proud to be Fleet Feet + FrontRunner’s physical therapy partner. We will keep you moving – no matter what you do. Contact Fit For Life Physical Therapy at (614) 981-1979 or www.fitforlifephysicaltherapy.com with your injury prevention, maintenance, or rehabilitation needs!
