Running with lower back pain

O.K., Marathoner in Training, this is one of those gut check weeks. If you’ve looked on the calendar, you may have noticed that you’ve completed more weeks of your training than you have remaining. Indeed, there are less than 70 days until you toe the line at the Columbus Marathon and ½ Marathon. We’ll be back at Ohio Dominican University this Saturday for that wide, shady, trail and mileage will start climbing back up again. Let’s get ready by really thinking about how you feel and if you’ve got any areas for improvement. One of those, your Core Strengthening, was the topic of this week’s fantastic Fit For Life Physical Therapy – MIT Education series talk. Thank you to Courtney from System of Strength and Marcy our yoga expert for delivering several good strengthening, flexibility, and breathing ideas for your reinforcing your Core.

Low back pain can stem from muscle asymmetries, low back mobility problems, strength deficits, nerve irritation, or structural changes in the spine. For the sake of brevity, I will outline the red flags, and then highlight some great ways that you can maintain a healthy back while running or walking.
