"Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment"
|
Welcome to the New Year. No more excuses. It's time to tackle those goals that have been haunting you. Patience though. No one conquered their New Year's Resolutions in the first seven days of the year.
Sometimes, okay a lot of the time it's best to do as I say, not as I do! (That's for you Dave Calvert) Yesterday as I was getting ready to line up for the First On The First 5K race director David Babner called me out for winning the first couple years of the event. He said something to the effect of "How long has it been anyway, now you just let these young guys take the glory." Being a relatively competitive individual those comments immediately erased my plans of taking it easy and simply having fun, especially considering that'd I'd been sidelined for the four weeks prior with pneumonia. So, like a dummy, I took off like a bat out of hell. A mile later (more like a half mile) reality set in. My lungs were on fire. My legs felt like they were running through molten lava. In technical terms, I blew the f up. I kept pushing to the finish simply to get it over with. Depsite knowing I had no business trying to run hard I was still dissappointed. That is until I saw my dad waiting there at the finish smiling and trying to take pictures with his phone. He got me and a few of the guys I know together for a picture, and kept telling how good I did. Deep down, I knew I had made a pretty dumb decision, but seeing how happy my dad was made me realize I'm still damn lucky to do what I do. Lucky as I may be, I'm also lucky I didn't get hurt.
As you get started towards your goals this year I hope you are excited. I hop you are ready to gie your all each and every day. I also hope you are a heck of a lot smarted than I am. Don't do too much too soon. The mantra of MIT is change your life, one mile at a time. Not twelve miles at a time. Take each day to check in on yourself. How are you progressing. How are you feeling. It is a long season, so if you feel wrecked one day, take the day off and come back stronger the next.
We have many weeks of training ahead of us. Some will be great. Some may be a bit bumpy. Enjoy the process. Trust the training. Be patient. Change doesn't happen over night, but it does happen.
The only thing that can stop you is you. Can't stop. Won't stop.
See you Saturday!

I've never run through the winter before; what on earth do I wear!?
There's a lot of wisdom and advice out there about how to best dress for the elements. We've condensed it down into this handy article to explain what apparel is best for the elements.

Ok, so I know that I need to layer, but why can't I wear a cotton tee from my last 5k?
Cotton is an organic fabric that collects and holds on to moisture- and when it does, grows bacteria. That's why it gets heavier and heavier the longer you sweat, and smellier the more you wear it. Technical fabrics, on the other hand, are key to staying warm and dry, because they pull moisture away from your skin and disperse it across its surface in order to more quickly move that moisture to evaporation off the material. This also helps keep you warmer in the winter, as we all know how much colder your body is when wet. Repeat after MIT: Cotton is Rotten!
